“But as it is written: ‘Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man. The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.' - 1 Corinthians 2:9
But as it is written:
Paul now draws an inference from Isaiah 64:4 and 65:17. The context of Isaiah 64 and 65 speaks to Israel in captivity. God put Israel in captivity to Babylon because of her rebellion. She was in a place of discipline.
Israel cried to God to deliver her from captivity. God delivered the Israelites after 70 years of exile and now gives them words of encouragement for present deliverance. Paul draws on the authority of written revelation to make the point that God delivers believers in time by promise.
“Eye has not seen, nor ear heard,
“Eye” and “ear” indicate an empirical way of knowing. A man by empirical evidence cannot find God. The content of Scripture cannot be observed in nature or creation. Man can know some things by creation, but he can know nothing of God’s love or God’s provision in Christ by nature or science.
Nor have entered into the heart of man.
Man does not seek God by his own volition.
The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
In this context “the things which God has prepared” is not the glory of heaven but the glory of the Word of God. God reveals His truth in the Word of God in the here and now (note verse 10).
PRINCIPLE:
Truth is undiscoverable by a human method.
